NCLEJ Responds to DOJ Indictment of SPLC

The National Center for Law and Economic Justice (NCLEJ) stands in solidarity with the Southern Poverty Law Center and all of our partners across the country in the ongoing struggle for racial, economic, and social justice for all.

It is no secret that this administration has gone out of its way to pursue and prosecute its political enemies, and to silence anyone who dares to challenge their efforts to return this country to a shameful era of its history—an era in which people can be disappeared from street corners for expressing their dissent; where warfare and tax cuts are prioritized over healthcare and food stamps; where immigrants can be rounded up indiscriminately and imprisoned without charge; where allegations of sexual assault by powerful men can be ignored, or even rewarded; and where the legacy of slavery and white supremacy is celebrated, rather than disavowed.

The Justice Department’s indictment of SPLC is simply the latest attempt to rewrite history and sully the reputation of those committed to exposing racial oppression and inequity in all its forms. To be clear, we still have much work to do before this country can truly realize its promise of liberty and justice for all. But throughout our history, it has been the tireless work and boundless courage of civil rights activists and organizations that have led to the extraordinary, albeit incomplete, progress we have made along the way. We will continue the fight to ensure that all people can live and thrive, free from hate and discrimination.

In its pursuit of absolute power, this administration has chosen to demonize the very institutions that have sought to rid this country of the racism and bigotry that have plagued the United States since its inception. NCLEJ stands on the side of justice. And we will not be silent.
