Missouri SNAP Recipients are still hungry

Something really important happened during the recently ended shutdown of the federal government: poor people mattered.

“A lot of people are suddenly understanding how important SNAP benefits are,” says Katie Deabler.

She’s an attorney with the National Center for Law and Economic Justice, a nonprofit that has been involved in an ongoing lawsuit in Missouri to make sure people have access to the federally funded program.

“That’s not a problem that is entirely going to go away when the government reopens,” Deabler said. “There’s going to be a lot of people in communities across the country who can’t access these benefits regardless of what Congress does.”

“It’s a little disappointing that (the state) has chosen to pursue an appeal on technical legal issues rather than fixing the SNAP system in Missouri so people can receive their benefits,” Deabler said.
