NCLEJ Applauds Supreme Court Decision Upholding DACA Program
Today, the Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration’s plan to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immigration policy which was implemented by former President Barack Obama. NCLEJ applauds this victory by and for immigrant youth! We stand with immigrant communities and commit to continuing our advocacy and fight against this administration’s unrelenting attack on immigrant communities.
DACA protects nearly 800,000 undocumented young people, called the Dreamers. Under the policy, Dreamers can obtain valid work permits and deferrals from deportation, and as a result, contribute to their communities without fear. Without DACA, about 685,000 workers would likely lose their jobs, resulting in a $460-billion loss in the nation’s gross domestic product over the next ten years.
The Supreme Court ruled that the current administration did not “provide reasoned explanation for its action” and therefore cannot immediately suspend the program.
